The Switch to Organic Apples

Did you know that apples rank 1st in the dirty dozen?

The dirty dozen is a selection of produce most highly contaminated by pesticides. Apples have been found to contain sometimes more than 40 different pesticides! Pesticide residue is also found in derivative apple products as juices and sauces.

When apples are sprayed, the pesticides stick to the skin and sink right into the core due to the naturally formed funnel shape near the stem. No amount of washing will clean it away.

Pesticides are toxic to human health and over the long term positive links have been found with certain cancers (breast, brain, leukaemia, prostate, liver, lungs and skin cancer). The sad news doesn’t end there… there is also evidence of links as birth defects, miscarriage, low birth weight and decreased fertility in men.

People working directly with contaminants are the most vulnerable in the short term and long term. China reports an average of 500 deaths a year due to poisoning by pesticides.

It’s not all bad news is it? Switching to organic can be expensive but cheaper in the long run in terms of our health. I also like the idea of growing a couple of things (or more if you can!) in our yards found on the dirty dozen list. And a simple swapping principal can be applied if you are not willing to go organic- how about using sweet potatoes (found on our clean 15 list) instead of regular ones?
