How to stay healthy in 2017
It’s the beginning of a new year and getting healthy and losing weight is at the top of people’s minds. However, fad diets and quick solutions don’t produce results over the long term. A holistic approach will help you feel well all year round. Here are my best tips for staying healthy in 2017.
Love your gut
From a holistic health viewpoint, it all begins in the gut! Maintaining a healthy gut can improve our overall health, from digestion to weight, hormonal imbalances, mood and immunity. An imbalance in the friendly gut bacteria can lead to constipation and the growth of toxins which lead can lead to disease and accelerated ageing. High fibre foods can stimulate the growth of the good bacteria. Top up on wholefood fruit and vegetables as much as possible (particularly after junk food!). Minimise alcohol and sugar which are two of the biggest culprits of promoting bad bacteria. Start each day with the juice of half a lemon in a glass of water and incorporate fermented veggies into your diet.
Support your adrenals
The demands of modern life mean that most of us will experience some form of adrenal fatigue at some point in our lives. Our adrenal glands sit above the kidneys and mediate our stress response. Fatigue, aches and pains, moodiness, cravings and weight gain can be an indication that our adrenals need support. Herbs known as adaptogens can support the body in mediating the stress response - these include Siberian ginseng and Ashwagandha. These work well in combination with Magnesium and B vitamins. Reducing coffee and sugar intake will help you get on top of stress as will incorporating stress management techniques such as mindfulness.
Keep a journal
A daily journaling practice can help you process stressful live events and help you feel calmer. It will also help you clarify your thoughts and feelings and know yourself better. By writing daily, you can gain insight into what makes you feel happy and confident and become clear about what’s important in your life.
The benefits reach even further, with researchers at the University of Texas discovering that journaling increases the strength of T-Lymphocytes, immune cells that help your body to fight off infection.
Commit to regular exercise
It is well known that exercise is good for our emotional as well as our physical wellbeing. Regular exercise can help manage our weight, stress and our mood as well as maintaining a healthy heart, hormones and immune system.
The key is to choose a form of exercise that you enjoy and that suits your lifestyle. Make room in your schedule for it and commit to doing it every day for 30 days to create a new habit. Going at the same time, to the same place will make it is easier for the new habit to stick all year round!
